"Expect nothing. Appreciate everything."

This motto is something I heard a couple years ago and put as my phone background for awhile to remind myself.

It's hard to expect nothing at times, especially as a teacher.

We are told that we need to have high expectations for our students but we can't expect them to know our expectations if we don't teach/tell them.

This idea of expecting nothing and appreciating everything is a life goal for me.

When former students show up in my room at the end of the day on a Friday, with a vase of flowers, I am appreciative that we created something together with the time we had.

I don't expect to be a student's favorite teacher.

I do, however, appreciate it when I'm told that I am.

And for that I am extremely grateful.
