My 'life's work'

July 26, 2018

As I write this I’m hoping that what I’m about to say captures the thoughts and feelings I’ve had recently about my ‘life’s work’.

First off, my wife and two boys are my life’s work. Specifically, my two boys. They are everything. I wouldn’t be writing this and you wouldn’t be reading it if I didn’t have them in my life. Merely their existence has made me think about life from perspectives I didn’t know existed. They’ve challenged me to be a better person without even knowing it. They’ve motivated me to not only think about my dreams but also the drive to do the things to achieve them.

Okay, now that we have that settled let’s move on to the life’s work that you may care more about.

At this point, as a 35-year-old human, I believe my ‘life’s work’ is helping the educational world truly understand the impact that it has on society. Specifically, I believe my work will be modeling, speaking and teaching teachers that the impact we have on students is beyond what we can fully comprehend. I certainly can’t comprehend it but it feels like this is what I’m supposed to be doing. So, I’m going with it.

I’ve written and podcasted about the summer of 2017 when I had this epiphany about what I’m going to do with the rest of my professional life. Besides teaching 11 and 12-year-olds (which is amazing), I’m going to document and share research about what it means to be a ‘credible’ teacher. A teacher that students trust and want to have as their teacher.

Who knows if I’m really as credible of a teacher as I think I am. I’ve learned that this isn’t really the point. It seems to be way more about the process of growing to become the type of teacher that students respect and listen to. It’s the process of reflecting on decisions that made me feel good/bad and how I can become more human in the process. It’s the process of becoming more comfortable being my true self while having an audience that is seeking the same thing.

As teachers, we are creating a legacy whether we like it or not. The easiest thing one can do to start creating the one they want is to become aware that it’s happening.

It IS happening.
