I reflect on what it means to be a 'credible' teacher...whatever that is.

WHAT IS TEACHER CREDIBILITY?

Many people can recall the teachers that made an impact on their lives in some way. What was it about them? Was their impact positive or did their actions motivate the former students to prove them wrong? Either way, teacher credibility has been proven to be an integral part of the student experience.

Research on teacher credibility shows that there are certain behaviors that create opportunities for students to perceive one teacher as more credible than another. That is what fascinates me.

It's my goal, through documenting my experiences as a classroom teacher, to discover what it means to be a credible teacher. A teacher my students will remember. A teacher who impacted their lives in a positive way that was based on trust and dare I say, love.

Affinity-seeking is defined as "the social-communicative process by which individuals attempt to get others to like them (Bell and Daly, 1984a). Since teachers are individuals and human, I'm looking into what teachers can do to increase their affinity-seeking behaviors...

Today was a day of apologies.

First, I was impatient with students in the library because they weren't reading. I quickly learned that someone was overly concerned about a classmate and needed to talk to someone about it.

I apologized for not being patient.

Then, st...

If you were like me three years ago, you may have been in a staff meeting and just first learning that teacher credibility was 'a thing'. I learned that a guy named John Hattie had done an enormous amount of research on the influences that increase (and decrease) stude...

Had a snow day today!

I was playing with my oldest son and chose to read a magazine rather than be present with him in that moment.

After reflecting briefly, I realized that if I want him to be present with me as we grow older together, that I need to do the same.

S...

Documenting the #progress here again.

So much to learn about this thing called teaching.

Stating to think it's more about learning about myself so that I can help others.

Thank you for your support along the way!

Being a credible teacher can mean something completely different to you than it does to me.

It seems most things in life can be looked at the same way.

How one person perceives something, compared to another experiencing the same thing, can be much different.

Same e...

"Expect nothing. Appreciate everything."

This motto is something I heard a couple years ago and put as my phone background for awhile to remind myself.

It's hard to expect nothing at times, especially as a teacher.

We are told that we need to have high expectations fo...

Greeting students in some way before the school day begins has been a goal of mine to begin this school year.

It's hard to remember but I've changed how I prioritize things based on research done about student success and greeting them at the door.

The reality is tha...

Community.

What does that word really mean? It has a warm feeling to it, doesn't it? As teachers, we want to create it because we know it'll make our lives easier. Not only that, we believe that it'll make our students lives easier. Even better than that, it'll improv...

A good reminder that I've been calling home for negative situations way more than positives.

Something I'm working on, among lots of other things.
